Glacier UK Summer School: 10 Essential Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Trip

Packing your child’s luggage for a summer school program in the UK is an important task for parents before embarking on this overseas adventure—it must be both practical and streamlined, while also ensuring your child’s comfort and safety. As a platform with years of experience in international education, Glacier (which offers summer schools, study abroad programs for young students, au pair programs), has compiled 10 essential tips based on the specific needs of our partner top UK boarding schools (such as Bonington, Winchester, and Hettington), to help your child embark on an unforgettable summer school experience with ease.

  1. Encourage children to pack their own bags to foster independence

Involving children in packing their luggage not only helps them keep track of what they’re bringing (preventing panic if items go missing), but also serves as the first step in fostering independence—a core competency objective of the Gelaixi Early Study Abroad Program. Parents can offer guidance from the sidelines, but should let their children decide how to arrange their belongings on their own, laying the groundwork for their future academic and personal life abroad.

  1. Pack light; avoid overpacking“

UK summer schools typically last only a few weeks, so we recommend choosing a medium-sized suitcase (20–24 inches is ideal) to ensure your child can carry it on their own. Upon successful booking, Gelaixi will send you a personalized “UK Summer School Admission Guide,” which includes a detailed "Essential Items/Prohibited Items List" to help you avoid common pitfalls (such as not bringing large appliances or valuables).

  1. Dealing effectively with the UK’s “unpredictable” weather

Summer temperatures in the UK range from 12°C to 35°C, with significant temperature differences between day and night. We recommend that you bring:

– Lightweight, warm outerwear (such as a windbreaker) and a hoodie (for rainy days or cool mornings and evenings);

– Shorts, T-shirts, sunscreen (the UV rays in the UK are strong, so don’t forget your sunscreen and a sun hat);

Gelaixi will provide parents with real-time weather updates for the summer school campus in advance, so you can pack more appropriately.

  1. Comfortable shoes provide a sense of security while walking“

The summer camp offers a wide variety of activities (sports, day trips, horseback riding, etc.). Please bring the following:

– 2 pairs of sneakers (one for everyday use and one that can get dirty for outdoor activities);

– Sandals/flip-flops (for showering or wearing in the dorm);

– Formal shoes (for evening social events);

For special programs at the Gelaishi Summer Camp (such as equestrian activities at Boneton), children do not need to bring riding boots or riding helmets—the camp will provide professional equipment free of charge.

  1. Activity Gear: Suitable for Summer School Special Programs

Gelaishi Summer School offers a diverse range of activities (tennis, golf, adventure sports, etc.), so specific preparation is required:

– Gym clothes, swimsuits, and swim towels (for swimming lessons or water activities);

– Equestrian activities: Please bring riding breeches, a long-sleeved shirt, and riding gloves (other equipment will be provided by the campus);

– Tennis: You may bring your own racket (if you don’t have enough space in your luggage, spare rackets are available on campus);

For short trips, we recommend that children bring a small backpack (containing water, snacks, and sunscreen). Teacher Gelaixi will accompany them throughout the trip to ensure their safety.

  1. Bring along some “comfort items” to ease homesickness

Being away from home can make children feel out of place—bringing a familiar item (such as a favorite stuffed animal, a pocket book, or a board game) can help soothe their emotions and provide a conversation starter when interacting with new friends. The life teachers at Gelaixi will closely monitor the children’s emotional well-being and help them quickly integrate into the group.

  1. Essential toiletries: The hotel does not provide these; please bring your own.

British summer camp dormitories typically do not provide disposable toiletries, so you will need to bring:

– Body wash, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste;

– Bath towels and hand towels (we recommend bringing two so you can use them alternately);

Gelaixi Tip: Avoid bringing large bottles of liquids; opt for travel-size options to save space in your luggage.

  1. Electronic devices: Compliant with UK standards

– Chargers and power banks (must comply with UK RoHS safety standards);

– UK-to-US adapter plug (Essential! To ensure your appliances work properly);

– Smartphone/tablet (we recommend installing a translation app; the summer camp has Wi-Fi coverage, making it easy for children to stay in touch with their parents);

If your child wears glasses or contact lenses, please bring a spare pair and cleaning supplies in case of loss or damage.

  1. Medication Management: Safety First

– If your child needs to take medication on a long-term basis, be sure to bring the medication in its original packaging along with the English-language instructions;

– Upon arrival at summer camp, all medications must be handed over to the staff for centralized storage and will be dispensed on schedule as prescribed by a doctor;

The summer camp is staffed with professional medical personnel to ensure the children's health and safety.

  1. Important Documents and Pocket Money: Keep Them Safe

– Required documents: passport, visa, summer school confirmation letter, travel consent form (required for children traveling alone);

– Pocket money: We recommend setting aside £60–80 per week (cash and a prepaid card; most places in the UK accept card payments);

Upon arrival, Gelaixi will help your child store important documents and cash in a safe place to prevent loss.
